Coldblood Interview

COLDBLOOD (Brazilian Death Metal)
Line up:
Diego Mercadante – Vox and Guitar
Markus Couttinho – Drums
ArturCirio – Lead Guitars

Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Markus Couttinho: We have just released a new album called "Indescribable Physiognomy of the Devil" and we are working on the promotion of this album, scheduling gigs, giving interviews and preparing a new videoclip.

In June you had released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Diego Mercadante: I would say that our sound is robust, aggressive and dramatic to which we could bring the texture of the 90´s without sounding vintage. The first album was made by a total different line up. In the second, in which I was already present and writing songs, we changed the course of the band because we felt that this was what it should be done. We had to improve our techniques and in some moments, extend this to our health by staying out of heavy drugs and everything else that could disturb us. The secret for us to get here is that we didn´t relax, we have kept our studies up to date.

The band has split up a couple of times, what was the cause of the split's and also the decision to reform?

Markus Couttinho: In the past we had no experience with business and there were other priorities, family pressure...but since 2005 we have got back together permanentlyand still with the original line up. We released our third demo "Reincarnating a New Black God" and signed a contract with aMexican label called Onslaught Rec. for the releasing of our first full length "Under the Blade I Die" in 2007, and since then we have never stopped. We changed the line up a couple of times until we got to this one in 2012. Nowadays, we are more experienced and focused on our careers. From 2009 until now, we have released 2 albums, an EP, 2 splits and three tours throughout South America and recorded our first official videoclip in 2015. We have been working hard to recover the lost time.

Your lyrics cover a lot of Satanic and Left Hand Path themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Diego Mercadante: When I joined Coldblood, Markus and I decided that the band should sound truly dark and satanic and for this we jumped into the theme and ideology. I am not a very partial person and I didn´t begin a quest just as a laboratory. We are the result of our experience and this interferes in what you search, in what you really consider a value and it´s not that easy some times to have it clear on your mind, but when you do, walking against the world makes your heart pulse and Darkness shows you where the real Light is. You´ll be consumed by the most intense Ágape that the world out there won’t ever offer you. Satanism is the spiritual lucidity, all the rest belongs to the Hilicbeeing we are and that wil ldisappear with time.

What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Coldblood'?

Diego Mercadante:We got over a lot of things and had to have a lot of courage to take the band where it is now. Maybe take an attitude in cold blood means to do what it has to be done being right or wrong, and we did it too many times.

What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Markus Couttinho: We did a gig in Brazil called Mega Metal, which was one of our best performances. We had great shows, sharing the stage with Mayhem, Benediction, Master, Asphyx, Funerus, Nervo Chaos and Gräfenstein. I always try to have a performance focused in music and on executing what was played in the album with precision and not in exhibitionism.

Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Markus Couttinho: We are talking to our agent to see what could be done. Because of the regular jobs we have we can´t leave at any moment for the tours but we are planning something to Mexico and Europe for the next year.

On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of death metal?

MarkusCouttinho:We have been receiving a lot of good reviews of the album coming from Germany, France, Sweden, USA and Belgium. A few are thanking us for releasing an album with a 90’s approach, a rare thing nowadays. We have been receiving a lot of good reviews in Asia too (India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and China) and here in South America

What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Markus Couttinho: Coldblood is my priority but I do play in other bands here in Rio as Grave Desecrator, Into the Cave, Mysteriis and OrdaHunok CARAVATSARAT. Our guitar player ArturCírio has a thrash metal side project called V.U.L.G.A.R. and Diego Mercadante, besides Coldblood, has a DSBM project called Monotomy and plays inMysteriis too. On top of this, Diego and I are beginning a new Black Metal project called Liber. As you can see, we don´t have much to do in life besides music.

Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Diego Mercadante: All of our albums are different, new harmonies, new techniques and in the middle of so many possibilities, we have to keep our essence.

What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Diego Mercadante: We have a lot of obviously classical Death Metal band influences and this is the main thing and it will always be. Particularly, Markus and I like Black Metal and DSBM very much so I believe that, naturally, some of the essence of these styles are incorporated in our sound. In our new album, as much as it may not be so clear, we were in a phase of listening to a lot of King Diamond stuff, so it´s possible to realize some double guitars in the leads. Nowadays, my playlist has a few Morbid Angel, Deicide, King Diamond and Skid Row albums.

Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Markus Couttinho: Thank you for the interview and a Hail to our fans and supporters. Listen to the new album, we will see you on the road.
